TOTEM Creative’s Exhibition & Private Reception …

Welcome to DracoB.com‘s news & events coverage of this month’s exhibition, ‘The Reflected Eye.’ The work of photographer Anthony Barboza is currently being featured in TOTEM Creative‘s exhibition in collaboration with Dune Studios, a show specially curated by celebrated model agent, Patty Sicular.

In homage to over 50 years of the fashion industry’s most notable photographers, ‘The Reflected Eye’ reminds viewers of the artists who stand behind the lens. The Reflected Eye Website 3cThe Reflected Eye, TOTEM Creative,

The exhibition features portraits of such iconic photographers as Norman Parkinson, Melvin Sokolsky & Erwin Blumenfeld, while acknowledging some of the industry’s most new-to-nubile about the scene. Enhanced with  a tie-in text titled “What makes a Photographer Sexy?” written by NYC gallirist, Steven Kasher, along with the curatorial assistance of NYC/Hamptons’ gallerist, Karen Boltax, ‘The Reflected Eye’ makes fresh observation how these spotlighted photographers honestly–  exuberantly, sometimes humorously and even provocatively, present themselves before the camera. Images from the Private Reception (which was held on May 19th) can be seen here, as well as links to official photographic coverage by BFA. ‘The Reflected Eye‘ is open to the public May 20th to June 30th on Wednesdays to Saturdays from 11am to 4pm at Dune Studios on 121 Varick Street, 7th Floor.

‘The Reflected Eye’ exhibition includes work from:  Rock-n-roll photographer Bob Gruen (photographer behind such legendary images of John Lennon, David Bowie, Mick Jagger & more); classic fashion, beauty photographer of VOGUE magazine, Arthur Elgort; Douglas Kirkland (the photographic eye behind such alluring & memorable images of Marilyn Monroe); and more..

…Ron Contarsy,  Jerry Schatzberg, James Porto, Fernand Fonssagrives, Rankin, Patrick McMullan, Norman Parkinson, Ralph Gibson, Ted Allan, Horst P. Horst, Paul Hesse, Herbert Matter, Francesco Scavullo, Otto Fenn, Denis Piel, Platon, and Melvin Sokolsky…

“When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see through a lens, darkly; but then face to face…”

About the Film

The New York Times on “Through a Lens Darkly”

The New York Times, Through a Lense Darkly

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/27/movies/through-a-lens-darkly-on-african-american-photography.html?_r=0

“…Mr. Harris, an artist as well as a filmmaker, argues that the humanity, the full membership of African-Americans in the larger American family, is precisely what has been at stake in the work of black photographers. He tells their stories partly as a way of looking at history from a new angle and partly because their careers are fascinating and revealing in their own right.

A lot of knowledge about slavery, abolitionism, Jim Crow and the civil rights movement comes to us through pictures, but we don’t always think about their sources and meanings. Mr. Harris marshals an impressive collection of scholars, artists and photojournalists to help us understand what we see in portraits of enslaved blacks and 19th-century antislavery crusaders like Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth, and to appreciate the vision of pioneering 20th-century photographers like James VanDerZee and Gordon Parks.”

“A rich and lyrical tapestry that is both personal and epic in scope, Thomas Allen Harris’s extraordinary documentary, Through a Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence of a People, is a unique examination of they way black photographers—and their subjects—have used the camera as a tool for social change from the time photography was invented to the present.”
