Anthony Barboza
Struttin’
Paintings 1984 – 1995
(including works by Danica & Leticia Barboza)

June 13 – July 11, 2013.

Anthony Barboza

Anthony ‘Tony’ Barboza, known for his great photography, has photographs in museum collections such as the Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Studio Museum in Harlem, as well as international collections such as Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall, Taiwan and University of Ghana, among many others.

In addition to his photography, Tony has been painting for his personal enjoyment. The paintings exhibit his sense of humor and project a unique free expression that can also be seen in works by Jean-Michel Basquiat and other outstanding self-taught artists.

Tony fully explains his theme title, Struttin’ for this exhibit: “Struttin’, Buttin’, Rappin’, Touchin’, with melodies of color all in rhythm. This being all about…Us!”

We are both pleased and honored to present Anthony Barboza’s ‘first ever’ exhibited paintings from the period 1984–1995.

About The Fop!

Draco Adollphus B, icon, the home page of DracoBDotCom, Danica BarbozaThe Fop Article 1, tb

” The Fop! “

“The Fop!: a Character Portrait of Draco Adollphus B”  is Multimedia Artist Danica C. Barboza’s latest sculpture of The Great Draco B.

This strikingly Life-Size figure, entirely hand-sculpted by the artist,is glazed in a narrative color spectrum of contemporary magazine clippings.

Flanked by a swirling arrangement of  ca. 18th Century styled textile/architectural decor (appropriate to its title), the image of Draco Adollphus B is brought to life through his carefully rendered mid-motion pose, cutting a dramatically down-cast likeness of the iconic Draco B as he strides towards his expectant viewers.

But, What …   ( you may ask, )    … Is a  Fop ?! :
Fop
Syllabification: (fop)     Pronunciation: /fɒp/
Definition of fop:a scketch of the Fop, the life size sculpture by Danica Barboza, 2
noun
[Middle English: ‘fobben’ to deceive; Middle High German: voppen] (15c.)
1) a man who is concerned with his clothes and appearance in an affected and excessive way.
2)a man who is devoted to or vain about his clothing or dress.
[Similar to the term ‘coxcomb’ and ‘dandy’, ‘Fop’ as a pejorative, rose in popularity during the 17th-18th century]
Verb: Fop
(Verb forms: Fop, Fopped, Fopping, 1602)
1) to Fool     2) to Doop
Derivatives:
Plural Noun: Foppery
(1546)
1) foolish character or action, Folly   2) the behavior or dress of a Fop
Adverb: Foppishly,   Noun: Foppishness
Other possible Origins and relations:
late Middle English (in the sense of a ‘fool’); possibly derived from the German ‘foppen’ meaning to “jeer at, make a fool of.” Sense of a “dandy” is from 1660s,
Possibly related to ‘fob’ (“Fob”=”small pocket for valuables,” probably related to Low German fobke “pocket,” High German fuppe “pocket,” “a dialectal word used in Livonia” [Klein]. Meaning “chain attached to a watch carried in the fob” is from 1885.)
